Family history

Researching the Rains, Smith, Maguire, Brady, Larkin, Speck, Hintz, (Hinze), Seiboth families all of South Australia from 1830s onwards. Also Kearns, O’Mealley, (Mealy) who arrived into NSW 1830s from Ireland. Dollman family arrived in Melbourne 1870.

Sarah Perkins, my great, great grandmother, born in Northamptonshire 30 July 1815, came to South Australia with William Raines, her husband on the Navarino, arriving 26 August 1837. Sarah died on 16 January 1871 at Dry Creek SA, but I have been unable to find a burial record for her. I believe life was very difficult for her in South Australia: After the birth of 9 children, she took William to court for desertion in 1858.

Mary-Ann Speck, born Cambridgeshire 25 May 1845 married my great-grandfather John Rains, (born 30 Dec 1839) in Adelaide on 7 March 1864. Mary-Ann died 25 May 1895 in hospital in Adelaide from typhoid and John died 11 May 1907.

Michael Smith born c 1832 County Cavan, Ireland migrated to South Australia (date unknown) and  died 17 October 1919 in Broken Hill, New South Wales. His Father was Patrick and mother Annie, (surname unknown.) Michael married Mary Maguire, (born c 1835 Lavey, County Cavan) on 15 August 1859 at Farrell Flat South Australia. Mary died on 11 October 1906 in Broken Hill New South Wales.

I am interested to know about Michael Smith’s family in Ireland. They are thought to be from Ballyjamesduff, County Cavan, Ireland.

Joachim Martin Heinrich Hinze, born 3 June1842 Mecklenberg, Germany, migrated to South Australia 1846 and died at Williamstown, South Australia 24 July 1912. Joachim married Marie Elizabeth Seiboth on 30 April 1865 at Tanunda, South Australia. Marie Seiboth was born 30 April 1843 in Tanunda South Australia and I am keen to hear from anyone with information about her parents. I now believe her father emigrated to New Zealand and remarried. He died at Karamea New Zealand January, 1906. Marie died 25 February 1906 at Williamstown SA.

Bruno Hinze aka Wilfred Bentley
Bruno Hinze aka Wilfred Bentley

Their son Bruno Alfred August Hinze, also known as Wilfred Bentley, has disappeared from the records after his wife, Lillian Dollman’s death in 1904. Bruno was born in Lyndoch South Australia on 23 August 1870. He married Lillian Dollman on 6 August 1897 in Box Hill Victoria under the false name, Wilfred Bentley.  Lillian Dollman was born August 1868 in Birmingham, England and died 23 July 1904 in Adelaide, South Australia. I  would love to hear any information about Bruno Hinze which may assist me in tracing his death etc. Contact me please via this website’s Contact page.

John O’Mealley born c 1832 Kurrajong, New South Wales and died 24 April,1918 Mildura Victoria. Desperately seeking further information about John O’Mealley’s forebears and how/when they came to Australia. I am keen to connect with researchers also working on this family.

Bridget Larkin, born c 1837 Ireland, migrated to Australia on the Epaminondas in 1853. She married John O’Mealley on 14 July 1862 at Kapunda South Australia and died 2 October, 1925 in Mildura, Victoria. I am very interested to learn more of the Larkin family. Her parents were Thomas Larkin and Margaret Carolan.

Charles Arthur Dollman, born 1846 Birmingham, migrated to Melbourne, Victoria 1870 and died 12 January 1916 in Melbourne . His wife Emily Sarah Hunt, born 1849 Warwickshire, England, died the day after arriving in Melbourne, Victoria on 25 March 1870. Her parents were William and Elizabeth Hunt.

On a trip to Birmingham in 2012, I visited Dale End where Charles Arthur Dollman’s father had a wine merchant’s business.

  2. Hi Liz, I know we were in touch earlier in the year. This is what I have been given from another descendant: “A death for Thomas has not been found but a possible death for Margaret has been found. A Mary Larkin died on 29 January 1887 at Pinda (north of Wilmington). Details of the entry are that she was aged 80 years; her husband, Thomas Larkin, a farmer, was deceased; and she died of old age and general debility. The undertaker was EP Dignan of Wilmington.” H
